Before We Grow Old
Summer in Berlin. Maria and Niels, both from Berlin, and Chloe, a student from the United Kingdom, are the three individuals in their twenties. As they lasciviously make their way across Berlin, they immediately throw themselves headfirst into an unrestrained and disorderly love affair with one another. They embrace everything and anything that piques their interest and live life to the fullest while acting with bluster and confidence. Their only apparent guide seems to be the joy they derive from being together, which works out just fine up to the point where Chloe becomes pregnant by accident. Now comes the time for envy, mistrust, and feelings of insecurity and rage. The decision to abort a pregnancy is made, but it is ultimately not carried out. Who is permitted to have a say, when is it authorized, and what exactly should it be about? Their peculiar trio falls apart, and their connection, which was previously stable, mutates into fluctuating constellations of two people–until it appears as though it may be possible to restore a fragile equilibrium, at least for a little while. Is it possible that utopia is within our grasp, or is this just the peace before the storm? To love in a distinctive manner requires a lot of effort. The world will not be ready for Maria, Niels, and Chloe when they arrive. And neither are they in any way.
