Dodes'ka-den
Akira Kurosawa's film follows the daily lives of a group of people who live in a slum on the outskirts of Tokyo. At times, it is both tragic and beautiful. As bad as their situation is, each of them has a reason to keep going. For example, the homeless father and son picture their dream house; the young woman was abused by her uncle; and the boy who imagines himself as a trolley conductor all have a reason to keep going. The Dodes'ka-den was made at a time when Kurosawa was going through a rough time in his life. This is the first color film that he made, and it's full of all of his hopes and fears, as well as all of his passion for making art.
