John Ford: Dreaming the Quiet Man
The documentary 'Dreaming the Quiet Man' has interviews with Ford devotees including Martin Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovicz, Jim Sheridan, William Dowling, and Joe McBride. There is a captivating collection and rare images documenting the film's production. The documentary's primary setting is Ford's ancestral home of Connemara, on Ireland's west coast, where his parents were born. We meet Ford's cousins, the Feeneys, who recount the story of Ford's parents fleeing Ireland following the Great Famine and the young Ford's return to Ireland in 1922 to visit his Thornton cousins and witness their house being burned down by the infamous Black and Tans. Ford made a contribution to the IRA while posing as a location scout for a film. We fly to Portland, Maine, where Ford was raised and later became a director during Hollywood's golden age. The youngster did well, but Ireland was never far away.
