Following her graduation from nursing school in the North, Pinky, a black lady with light skin, travels down to the South to live with her grandmother. Pinky confesses to her grandma that, while attending school in the North, she has been "passing" for white. She uses the term "passing" to describe her ability to conceal her race. In addition to this, Pinky is head over heels in love with a young white physician by the name of Dr. Thomas Adams, who has no idea what her ancestry is.
