The Battle of the River Plate
In the early years of World War II, the Royal Navy was fighting a very hard fight to keep the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles well-stocked. There were a lot of surface/commerce raiders that had slipped out of German waters just before war broke out. They were very dangerous. They were mostly supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers, and they mostly attacked and sank merchant ships. They could and did strike anywhere and everywhere. One of these ships is called the "Admiral Graf Spee," and it was armed with 11-inch guns. This is the story of how three Royal Navy cruisers with 6 and 8-inch guns bravely took on this powerful "pocket battleship."
