The Orphanage
A historical drama with Bollywood musical numbers. Kabul in the early nineties Soviet values dominate the nation. Women can wear miniskirts, children can attend school, and men and women can go the movies, concerts, and universities. Life in Afghanistan is comparable to that in the West. On the streets of Kabul, 14-year-old Qodrat sells cinema tickets on the illegal market. After inadvertently selling a ticket to a secret police officer, he ends up at a Soviet orphanage, where he falsifies his identity in order to gain greater authority. As it is for children in other areas of the world, Qodrat's everyday existence revolves around friendships, falling in love, doing mischievous things, and traveling on adventures. Behind the secure walls of the orphanage, however, the world they once knew is undergoing a radical transformation as the Mujahideens launch the civil war.
