Alley Cat
Yosuke Kubozuka plays an ex-boxer who is self-medicating for the injuries that ruined his career. He comes across a stray cat that makes his day better, but she is quickly taken away by a comedic, grungy mechanic (Kenji Furuya). The strange couple, who refer to one other by the dueling names they given the cat, Maru and Lily, are suddenly drawn into a political scheme with Saeko (Yui Ichikawa) and her kid at the core of the plot. After being witnesses to yet another instance of the powerful taking advantage of the powerless, the two homeless individuals decided to embark on a journey for redemption, or at the very least, the peaceful ownership of cats. (Interesting fact: Yosuke Kubozuka and Kenji "KJ" Furuya, who appeared in the film Alley Cat together, also collaborated in 2017 on the release of the single "Soul Ship." Manji Line and Furuya are both aliases that Kubozuka uses when performing with the band Dragon Ash.) -JAPAN CUTS: A Festival of New Japanese Film
