American Friends

A senior Oxford don on vacation alone in the Alps encounters American Caroline and her companion Elinor, the growing Irish-American girl she adopted many years ago. Both Elinor and Ashby are drawn to Ashby when he discovers how much he enjoys their company. Even after he returns to Oxford, he is surprised when they show up without warning. Women are not permitted on the campus or in the residence halls. Indeed, any kind of relationship, no matter how benign, is frowned upon by the Fellows.
