Black Is … Black Ain’t
Marlon Riggs, an African-American documentary filmmaker, passed away in 1994 due to issues connected to AIDS while he was working on his final project; in numerous moments, he addresses the camera from his hospital bed. The documentary takes a direct stance against sexism and homophobia in the black community by juxtaposing excerpts of anti-gay and misogynistic slurs from popular hip-hop songs with interviews with African-American intellectuals and political theorists such as Cornel West, bell hooks, and Angela Davis.
