City of the Sun

Up to fifty percent of the world's manganese, an essential metal, was once extracted at Chiatura, in western Georgia. It now resembles a post-apocalyptic ghost town. Mzis qalaqi depicts some of the remaining residents. Zurab, a music instructor, dismantles dilapidated concrete structures and sells the iron girders to supplement his income. Archil continues to work in the mine, but his true interest is the community theater group. Two teenage female athletes train stoically for the next Olympic Games despite being underweight.
