Francesco
People who were close to St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) share their stories with Leone after his death so that she can write them down. He was a rich and privileged young man who was imprisoned in war, an heir who gave away everything and became an inspiration to friends who lived the Gospels' way of living. When he asks the Pope for his blessing, the family of Chiara Offreduccio (1194-1253), the mother of St. Clare, attacks him, and he is forced to flee. Many people join the rules he has set up and then break them when they don't like them. During this time, he is close to giving up and sick, so he writes a Rule to take to the Pope. The Lord then tells him to read the Rule. He smiles when he dies.
