Funeral Parade of Roses
Funeral Parade of Roses is a delirious mix of avant-garde style and grind-house shocks. It takes us on an electrifying journey into the darkest corners of late-'60s Tokyo, where people lived and died. No one seems to be off limits in Toshio Matsumoto's controversial first movie, which is filled with graphic design, painting and comic book visual flourishes, as well as scenes of sex, drugs, and public toilets that aren't afraid to show. But of all the "transgressions" that are on display, perhaps one of them stands out the most: the film's groundbreaking and unapologetic depiction of Japanese gay culture in a way that was never done before.
