Hubble's Cosmic Journey
This is your portal to the cosmos... Hubble was launched aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in April 1990. Its launch into orbit over 500 kilometers above the Earth marked the beginning of one of humanity's greatest aspirations: to deploy a telescope in space, far above the obscuring effects of the atmosphere, to obtain the clearest possible picture of the cosmos. In the months that followed, however, it became evident that the dream had turned into a nightmare, as a flaw was discovered in Hubble's mirror. Following three years of anguish and enormous human resolve, a rescue mission was launched to correct the problem. The results were astounding and provided the most comprehensive perspective of the universe ever obtained. This is the narrative of the men and women who planned, constructed, maintained, and operated Hubble, the most renowned scientific instrument.
