Hurley
Hurley Haywood was a calm, collected driver in the 1970s. Haywood, a five-time 24 Hours of Daytona winner, three-time Le Mans winner, and Trans-Am champion, was a Hollywood archetype: a breathtakingly gorgeous man raised by a nice Midwestern family. However, Haywood was frequently overshadowed by his racing companion and tempestuous mentor, Peter Gregg—the Batman to his Robin—whose sudden suicide in 1980 shocked the sport to its core. Despite this, Haywood had his own secrets. Despite repeated interactions with women, some of which involved public appearances with Penthouse models, he remained tight-lipped about his personal life. Hurley gives a wider insight into Haywood's balancing balance between profession and sexuality, while presenting the question—will racing ever be ready for openly LGBT racers?
