Ironweed

Albany, Halloween, Ny, 1938. Francis Phelan and Helen Archer are all bumsback in their own arrival city. She had been a singer on the radio, he a significant league pitcher. Death surrounds them: she's ill, and a pal has cancer, he and the tomb of his baby son whom he dropped digs graves and visit. Dreams of his past haunt himincluding ghosts of two men he killed. Drinking out, Helen tries to sing at a bar that night. Next day, Fran matches a grandson also visits with his wife and kiddies. He could stay, but decides it's not due to him. Helen finds a hotel and gets their things. Assessing dereliction and their mistakes, the film explores their code of fairness and loyalty.
