Limite
Limite, the only feature film by Brazilian director and author Mário Peixoto, was made when he was only 22 years old. It is an amazing piece of work. This avant-garde silent masterpiece is based on a haunting photograph by André Kertész that was on the cover of a French magazine. It is about a man and two women who are lost at sea, and their pasts are shown through flashbacks set to music by Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, and others. Limite, an early independent South American film, was notoriously hard to find for most of the 20th century. It was a first-of-its-kind achievement that still draws people in with its visual poetry.
