Portrait of Kaye
Due to her lifelong agoraphobia, Kaye has spent the majority of her life within the confines of her parents' home. Finding comfort in the faces and lifestyles of old film stars, she pastes their photographs alongside those of her deceased family members to create a kaleidoscopic collage that combines personal history with Hollywood imagination. Depiction of Kaye is a heartbreaking portrait of a woman forging her own distinctive character while balancing the competing effects of her mother's raunchy humor and her father's concerns. Now 74 and newly widowed, her attraction to a younger neighbor allows her the opportunity to explore hitherto concealed personal and sexual liberties. Ben Reed, a former next-door neighbor and music video director, filmed a unique and moving meditation on family, film, and the meaning of freedom over the course of two years.
