Remember the Sultana
Over 2000 Union soldiers, passengers and crew were crammed aboard the boat Sultana, licensed to lug 376. Graft, greed, overcrowding, an improperly kept boat, and the Mississippi River was swollen with spring snowmelt conspired with each other to produce a disaster. On April 27, 1865, the watercraft's central heating boilers took off, causing the worst maritime disaster in United States history.
