In this film, we follow the tale of a Jewish family living in Hungary across three generations, who rise from poor beginnings to positions of wealth and power in the crumbling Austro-Hungarian Empire. He rises to prominence as a judge, but is split when his government approves anti-Jewish persecutions. His son, a champion fencer and Olympic star, converts to Christianity in order to better his profession, but he is caught up in the Holocaust as a result. After enduring war, revolution, tragedy, and treachery, the grandson finally recognizes that his ultimate allegiance must be to himself and his ancestors.
