That Summer
Gray Gardens is a classic film by Albert and David Maysles that shows the home of Edith and Little Edie Beale, two relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, who lived in shockingly poor conditions. The Maysles were first brought to the Beales by Lee Radziwill and Peter Beard, who were making a movie about Radziwill's childhood. They first met them when they were making the movie together. The reels of that first meeting were put away for 45 years. That lost footage is found in this movie. Our journey back to "that summer" in 1972 is anchored in Beard's memories and artistic vision. We are drawn into the seductive dream world and collage of radically unconventional creative personalities who are practicing the art of living in a world of class expectations and prejudice.
