The Birth of a Nation

The two families, abolitionist Northerners that the Stonemans and Southern land owners that the Camerons, intertwine in director D.W. Griffith's contentious Civil War epic. When Confederate colonel Ben Cameron is recorded in conflict, nurse Elsie Stoneman petitions due to his pardon. In Reconstruction-era Sc, Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan, combating the congressman father and his Africanamerican protégé, Silas Lynch of Elsie.
