The Major and the Minor

Susan Applegate, who has had enough of New York after one year and twenty-five jobs, decides to return to her hometown of Newburyport, Massachusetts. When Susan realizes she doesn't have enough money to pay for the train fare, she disguises herself as a twelve-year-old in order to travel for half the cost. When she is discovered by the conductors, she flees to the compartment of Major Philip Kirby, a military school instructor who takes the "kid" under his wing and cares for her.
