The Mayo Clinic, Faith, Hope and Science
The Mayo Clinic: Faith-Hope-Science is the story of a unique medical institution that has been referred to as a "Medical Mecca," the "Supreme Court of Medicine," and a "haven for hope where there is no hope." After a devastating tornado in rural Minnesota in 1883, the Mayo Clinic was founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis and a rural physician named William Worrall Mayo. Since then, it has developed into an institution that annually treats over one million patients from all 50 states and 150 countries. Dr. Mayo taught his sons Will and Charlie a basic philosophy: "the patient's needs are first." Instead of treating diseases, they would treat individuals. In a world where healthcare delivery is generally fragmented among specialized specialties, the Mayo Clinic employs a multi-specialty, team-based approach and has fostered a culture of collaboration from its inception.
