The Profession of Arms
In 1526, Charles V sends German landsknechts led by Georg von Frundsberg to Rome. Giovanni de'Medici's inferior papal soldiers chase them in the winter. The Imperial armies cross rivers and receive guns owing to their Lords. Giovanni de'Medici is shot in the leg by a falconet. His remedy fails and he dies. Imperial armies raid Rome. The film is gorgeously but unassumingly set and exposes war's hardships and lack of glory. It finishes with the declaration of European army commanders following Giovanni de'Medici's death not to employ fire weapons again because of their cruelty.
