The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

This straightforward tragedy begins in 1957. Guy Foucher, a French auto mechanic, has recently fallen inlove with 17-year-old Geneviève Emery, an employee in the posh but fiscally embattled umbrella shop of her widowed mother. On the evening before Guy will be to leave in Algeria to get a excursion of combat, he and Geneviève make love. She becomes pregnant and has to select from waiting for Guy's reunite or accepting an offer of marriage by a wealthy diamond merchant.
