When older pensioner Umberto Domenico Ferrari yields out of a protest calling for a hike in old-age pensions his boarding house, his landlady demands her rent by the close of the month or he and his small dog is going to be turned onto the street. Unable to receive the amount in time, Umberto fakes disease to get delivered to a hospital, giving his beloved dog into the landlady's pregnant and abandoned maid to get temporary safekeeping.
