In 1983, private yacht seafarer Will Parker leads an American team financed by millionaire Morgan Weld to beat during the America's Mug race versus an Australian team. Identified to obtain the prize back, Will convinces Morgan to fund an experimental boat created by his ex-girlfriend Kate's new beau, Joe Heisler. When the watercraft is completed, the Americans head to Australia to recover the mug.
