The New Archies

The New Archies is a children's animated television series based on the long-running Archie comics and characters. Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle, and the other Riverdale High School students were re-envisioned as pre-teens in junior high school in this DIC Entertainment-produced and NBC-original sitcom. Fourteen episodes were created, all of which aired during the show's first and only season in 1987 and were rerun the following year. A brief-lived Archie Comics series with the same title and setting as the animated series was developed. The series aired in reruns on The Family Channel's Saturday morning schedule from 1991 to1993, then on Toon Disney from 1998 to 2002. Veronica speaks like a valley girl in this series. However, she had a southern accent in preceding animated cartoons and the radio program. Eugene, a person of African descent, succeeded Dilton Doiley as the "intelligent" figure. Amani, the girlfriend of Eugene, was also added to the cast. Red, Archie's dog, was also acquired.
