The Red Tent
Her name is Dinah. From the Bible her life is only hinted at during a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told through the eloquent voice of Dinah, this sweeping mini series shows the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood. Dinah's narrative starts with the narrative of her mothers: Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah, Jacob's four wives. They love Dinah and give her gifts that are to sustain her through a hard-working childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign property. We are told by dinah of this entire world of the red tent, the place where women were sequestered during their cycles of birthing, menses, and illness. Of her initiations into the sexual and religious practices of her tribe. Of all Jacob's courtship along with his four sisters. Of the mystery and miracle of caravans, farmers, shepherds, as well as slaves. Death and of love within the city of Shechem. Joseph's rise in Egypt, and of course her union to Shechem and it's bloody consequences.
