You Can't Do That on Television
This is a Canadian television show that aired locally in 1979 before making its way to the rest of the world in 1981. Sketch comedy performed by pre-teen and adolescent performers was the format of choice. Each episode has a distinct theme. Alanis Morissette and Bill Prady, who would go on to develop and produce shows including The Big Bang Theory, Gilmore Girls and Dharma and Greg, were among the many stars who found success on the show. The show was made by and aired on Ottawa's CTV station CJOH-TV. Nickelodeon continued to air repeats of the show after it finished production in 1990 until 1994, when it was replaced by the similarly themed All That. The show has become synonymous with Nick and had the highest overall ratings on the channel when it first premiered. The show is also credited for popularizing Nickelodeon's trademark slime. You Can't Do That on Film, a 2004 feature-length documentary by David Dillehunt, focuses on the program.
